design process
My inspiration for the workwear jacket design came from the bold energy of 90s rap culture combined with the clean functionality of modern workwear. I wanted to capture an iconic boxy silhouette and large collar, blending the two worlds into one cohesive piece. Within my mood board, I featured key figures from the 90s rap scene who not only revolutionized music but also pushed the boundaries of fashion—artists like Tupac, Biggie, and Eazy-E. Their influence on oversized fashion looks served as the foundation for my design, merging nostalgia with contemporary utility.

Fashion Sketch of Workwear JacketOnce I finalized the jacket’s design, I moved into the production phase, starting with drafting the patterns. I meticulously measured and cut each piece to achieve the boxy silhouette I envisioned. After selecting the fabric, I began cutting it according to the patterns and then moved on to construction, ensuring clean lines and strong seams throughout. I decided to add an inner lining to the bodices for extra comfort and structure. The lining not only enhances the jacket’s durability but also provides a smoother finish inside, ensuring it feels as good as it looks when worn.

Outer Bodice Shell PinningThe fabric choice for this jacket was made to balance both aesthetic and functional needs. I selected a heavyweight grey cotton canvas for the outer layer due to the cotton fibers' strength and breathability, which provides long-lasting wear while remaining comfortable which is why they are typically used in workwear. The canvas’s heavyweight nature also adds to the jacket’s sturdiness, making it ideal for achieving the boxy silhouette.
For the lining, I chose a thick black linen, a natural fiber known for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Linen is highly absorbent and dries quickly, making it comfortable for the wearer even in changing conditions. The linen's added thickness complements the outer cotton canvas by providing warmth and support without compromising the jacket's breathable qualities. Together, these fibers create a jacket that is not only stylish but also practical, ensuring the durability, comfort, and temperature regulation for the wearer.
